What Does P0458 Mean?
The EVAP purge control valve circuit is reading a lower voltage or current than expected by the PCM. This low circuit condition indicates the purge valve solenoid winding may be shorted, the control wire may be grounded, or there is a wiring fault pulling the circuit low. The purge valve cannot be properly controlled, preventing normal EVAP purge operation. The check engine light will illuminate.
Common Causes
35%
Signal or control wire shorted to ground in the purge valve harness
30%
Internally shorted purge control solenoid coil (turn-to-turn short)
20%
Water intrusion or corrosion in the purge valve connector causing low resistance path
10%
PCM purge valve driver circuit pulled low internally
5%
Damaged harness insulation near engine or exhaust heat sources
Diagnostic Steps
1
Disconnect the purge valve connector and measure solenoid coil resistance. Normal is typically 20-40 ohms. A reading significantly below specification or near 0 ohms confirms a shorted coil.
2
With the valve disconnected, check the control wire from the harness connector to ground using a multimeter. Should read OL (open). Any measurable low resistance indicates a wire shorted to ground.
3
Visually inspect the purge valve harness for chafing against the engine, intake manifold, or other components that could abrade insulation and cause a ground contact.
4
Check the connector for moisture, corrosion, or damaged seals. Clean with electrical contact cleaner and verify terminals are tight.
5
If the harness and valve test good, check the PCM output pin voltage with the connector disconnected and key on. It should read battery voltage (12V+) if the PCM driver is healthy.

The most common cause of P0458 (Evaporative Emission System Purge Control Valve Circuit Low) is: Signal or control wire shorted to ground in the purge valve harness
Typical repair costs for P0458 range from $75 to $350, depending on the vehicle, location, and whether you do it yourself or go to a shop.
Safe to drive. The EVAP purge valve low circuit is an emissions concern only. Fuel vapors may not be properly routed to the engine for combustion, but this does not affect drivability or safety.
Start by connecting an OBD2 scanner to read the code and any freeze frame data. Then follow the diagnostic steps specific to P0458 to identify the root cause.
