What Does P0448 Mean?
The PCM has detected a short circuit condition in the EVAP vent control valve circuit. This means the vent valve wiring or the valve itself has an abnormally low resistance path, drawing excessive current. The EVAP system cannot be properly sealed for leak testing. The driver will see a check engine light and the vehicle will fail emissions inspection.
Common Causes
35%
Shorted wiring harness to the vent control valve (insulation damage allowing wire-to-wire or wire-to-ground contact)
30%
Internally shorted vent control solenoid coil
20%
Water intrusion or corrosion in the vent valve connector causing a low-resistance path
10%
PCM vent valve output driver damaged by short circuit
5%
Aftermarket wiring or splice creating a short condition
Diagnostic Steps
1
Disconnect the vent valve connector and measure coil resistance. Normal is 20-50 ohms; a reading significantly below 15 ohms or near 0 ohms indicates an internal coil short.
2
With the valve disconnected, check each harness wire for resistance to ground. Both wires should read OL (open). Any measurable resistance below 10K ohms indicates a short to ground.
3
Check wire-to-wire resistance between the two harness conductors with both ends disconnected. Should read OL. Low resistance indicates wire-to-wire short.
4
Visually trace the harness from the PCM to the vent valve, looking for chafing where the harness contacts body panels, frame members, or exhaust components.
5
If the harness is clean, verify the PCM output driver by measuring voltage output at the PCM connector pin with key on—should be near battery voltage or 0V depending on commanded state.

The most common cause of P0448 (Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Shorted) is: Shorted wiring harness to the vent control valve (insulation damage allowing wire-to-wire or wire-to-ground contact)
Typical repair costs for P0448 range from $75 to $400, depending on the vehicle, location, and whether you do it yourself or go to a shop.
Safe to drive. A short circuit in the vent valve circuit is an emissions concern. The only risk is potential fuse blowing if the short is severe enough to overload the circuit, but this would not affect drivability.
Start by connecting an OBD2 scanner to read the code and any freeze frame data. Then follow the diagnostic steps specific to P0448 to identify the root cause.
