P0441

Easy (DIY)

Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow

What Does P0441 Mean?

The PCM has detected that the EVAP system purge flow is not within the expected range. When the PCM commands the purge valve open, it expects to see a specific amount of fuel vapor flow from the charcoal canister into the intake manifold. The actual flow is either too much or too little. This could indicate a purge valve issue, a leak, or a blockage in the purge line. The driver may notice a slight fuel smell.

Common Causes

35%

Faulty EVAP purge valve (stuck open, stuck closed, or leaking)

Purge valve/solenoid

25%

Cracked, disconnected, or blocked purge hose

Purge hose
Vapor lines

15%

Charcoal canister saturated or damaged affecting vapor flow

Charcoal canister

15%

Leak in the EVAP system between the canister and purge valve

EVAP hoses
Quick-connect fittings
Canister connections

10%

Loose or damaged fuel cap affecting system pressure

Fuel cap
Fuel cap gasket

Diagnostic Steps

1

Command the purge valve open with the engine running and monitor the change in short-term fuel trim — a working purge system will cause a brief rich shift (negative STFT) as fuel vapors enter the intake. No change indicates no purge flow.

2

Disconnect the purge valve inlet hose and apply vacuum with a hand pump — the valve should hold vacuum when de-energized and release it when 12V is applied.

3

Check the purge hose from the canister to the purge valve and from the purge valve to the intake manifold for cracks, kinks, or disconnections.

4

With the purge valve commanded closed, apply vacuum to the intake side — it should hold vacuum. If it bleeds off, the purge valve is leaking internally.

5

Inspect the charcoal canister for physical damage, saturation (often caused by overfilling the fuel tank), or a clogged vent filter.

What causes P0441?

The most common cause of P0441 (Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow) is: Faulty EVAP purge valve (stuck open, stuck closed, or leaking)

How much does it cost to fix P0441?

Typical repair costs for P0441 range from $50 to $350, depending on the vehicle, location, and whether you do it yourself or go to a shop.

Is it safe to drive with P0441?

Safe to drive. Incorrect purge flow may cause a slight fuel odor and marginally increased emissions. No engine performance or safety impact. May fail emissions testing.

How do I diagnose P0441?

Start by connecting an OBD2 scanner to read the code and any freeze frame data. Then follow the diagnostic steps specific to P0441 to identify the root cause.
