P0429

Moderate

Catalyst Heater Control Circuit (Bank 1)

What Does P0429 Mean?

The PCM has detected a malfunction in the catalyst heater control circuit on bank 1. This circuit controls an electric heating element in or around the catalytic converter designed to bring it to operating temperature faster during cold starts. A control circuit malfunction means the PCM cannot properly energize or de-energize the heater element. The driver will see the check engine light and cold-start emissions may be elevated.

Diagnostic Steps

1

Check the heater circuit fuse first — a blown fuse is the most common and easiest fix. Replace and monitor; if it blows again, there is a short in the heater element or wiring.

2

Locate the catalyst heater connector and measure the heater element resistance. Typical spec is 1-5 ohms depending on the application. An open reading (OL) indicates a burned-out element.

3

With the heater disconnected, verify the relay provides battery voltage to the heater power feed when commanded. If no voltage, test the relay by applying 12V to its coil terminals and checking for contact closure.

4

Check the PCM ground-side control wire for proper switching. The PCM typically grounds the relay coil circuit — verify with a test light or multimeter that the PCM pulls the control wire to ground when the heater should be active.

5

Inspect all wiring for heat damage, especially near the catalytic converter where temperatures can exceed 1000°F. Replace damaged wiring with high-temperature-rated conductors.

What causes P0429?

The most common cause of P0429 (Catalyst Heater Control Circuit (Bank 1)) is: Failed catalyst heater element (open or shorted heating coil)

How much does it cost to fix P0429?

Typical repair costs for P0429 range from $150 to $600, depending on the vehicle, location, and whether you do it yourself or go to a shop.

Is it safe to drive with P0429?

Safe to continue driving. The catalyst heater mainly affects cold-start emissions and catalyst warm-up time. Without it, the converter will still reach operating temperature from exhaust heat alone, just more slowly. Emissions testing may fail.

How do I diagnose P0429?

Start by connecting an OBD2 scanner to read the code and any freeze frame data. Then follow the diagnostic steps specific to P0429 to identify the root cause.
