What Does P0426 Mean?
The catalyst temperature sensor on bank 1, sensor 1 (pre-catalyst) is not performing within the expected range. The sensor may be reading a temperature that doesn't correlate with current engine conditions, responding too slowly to temperature changes, or showing values that conflict with other sensor data. The PCM cannot properly evaluate catalyst temperature for protection or efficiency monitoring. The check engine light will be illuminated.
Common Causes
35%
Degraded catalyst temperature sensor with slow response or drifted calibration
25%
Carbon or soot buildup on the sensor probe insulating it from actual exhaust temperature
20%
High-resistance connection in the sensor circuit causing voltage errors
12%
Exhaust leak near the sensor location introducing cooler ambient air
8%
Incorrect sensor installed (wrong resistance curve for the application)
Diagnostic Steps
1
Monitor the catalyst temperature sensor PID while warming the engine from cold. The reading should climb steadily and correlate with increasing coolant temperature and exhaust activity. Erratic or flat readings indicate sensor issues.
2
Compare the pre-cat temperature reading with the post-cat sensor (if equipped) and the calculated exhaust temperature. Large discrepancies suggest the sensor is out of calibration.
3
Remove the sensor and inspect the probe tip for heavy soot or carbon deposits. Clean carefully or replace if heavily fouled.
4
Check for exhaust leaks near the sensor mounting bung. A leak can draw in cool air, lowering the measured temperature and causing a range/performance concern.
5
Verify the sensor part number matches the OEM specification. Aftermarket sensors sometimes have different resistance curves that can trigger range/performance codes.
Estimated Repair Cost
$100 - $400

The most common cause of P0426 (Catalyst Temperature Sensor Range/Performance (Bank 1, Sensor 1)) is: Degraded catalyst temperature sensor with slow response or drifted calibration
Typical repair costs for P0426 range from $100 to $400, depending on the vehicle, location, and whether you do it yourself or go to a shop.
Drive with moderate caution. The PCM may not accurately detect converter overheating, which could allow damage during sustained high-load operation. Normal city and highway driving is generally safe.
Start by connecting an OBD2 scanner to read the code and any freeze frame data. Then follow the diagnostic steps specific to P0426 to identify the root cause.
