What Does P040D Mean?
The EGR temperature sensor A circuit is reporting a voltage that the ECM interprets as an abnormally high temperature. For NTC thermistors, this means the sensor resistance is too low (short circuit), causing the ECM to see an excessively high temperature reading. Alternatively, the signal wire may be shorted to ground. The driver typically will not notice drivability symptoms, but the ECM cannot verify EGR flow using temperature monitoring.
Common Causes
35%
Signal wire shorted to ground due to insulation damage from heat exposure
30%
Failed EGR temperature sensor with internally shorted element
20%
Water or contaminant intrusion in the connector creating a low-resistance path
15%
Sensor wiring routed too close to exhaust components causing insulation meltdown
Diagnostic Steps
1
Check the EGR temperature sensor PID — if reading an impossibly high value (e.g., 300F+ with the engine cold), this confirms a low-resistance fault (shorted sensor or shorted wiring for NTC sensors).
2
Disconnect the sensor and recheck the PID — if the reading changes to -40F (open circuit), the sensor is shorted internally. If it remains high, the wiring is shorted to ground.
3
Measure sensor resistance — at room temperature it should be approximately 2,000–3,000 ohms. A very low reading (near 0 ohms) confirms an internal short.
4
Inspect the wiring route from the sensor to the ECM — the EGR area experiences extreme heat. Look for melted insulation, wiring contacting exhaust manifolds, or heat shield damage.
5
Check the connector for moisture intrusion or carbon tracking between pins that could create a low-resistance path.
Estimated Repair Cost

The most common cause of P040D (Exhaust Gas Recirculation Temperature Sensor "A" Circuit High) is: Signal wire shorted to ground due to insulation damage from heat exposure
Typical repair costs for P040D range from $50 to $200, depending on the vehicle, location, and whether you do it yourself or go to a shop.
Safe to drive. This fault affects EGR temperature monitoring only. No impact on engine performance or safety. Will fail emissions testing.
Start by connecting an OBD2 scanner to read the code and any freeze frame data. Then follow the diagnostic steps specific to P040D to identify the root cause.
