What Does P012A Mean?
The ECM has detected a general circuit malfunction in the turbocharger/supercharger inlet pressure sensor located downstream of the throttle valve. This sensor measures manifold pressure between the throttle body and the turbo/supercharger compressor inlet, helping the ECM calculate boost control and wastegate operation. A circuit fault means the signal is outside the expected voltage window or is electrically erratic.
Common Causes
35%
Failed turbo inlet pressure sensor with internal circuit failure or damaged pressure-sensing diaphragm
30%
Damaged or corroded wiring connector at the inlet pressure sensor causing signal dropout or offset
20%
Wiring harness damage between sensor and ECM caused by heat exposure from turbo proximity or chafing
15%
Blocked or leaking vacuum reference hose to the pressure sensor affecting measurement accuracy
Diagnostic Steps
1
With key on engine off, check the turbo inlet pressure sensor reading on a scan tool. It should read near atmospheric pressure (approximately 101 kPa or 14.7 PSI). A reading of 0 or near maximum indicates a circuit fault.
2
Inspect the sensor connector for heat damage, melted terminals, or corrosion. These sensors are often located near the turbocharger where temperatures are extreme.
3
Verify 5V reference voltage and ground at the sensor connector with the sensor disconnected. If 5V reference is missing, check for shorts on the shared reference bus.
4
Measure the sensor output voltage directly at the ECM connector pins. Compare with the reading at the sensor connector to check for voltage drops in the wiring.
5
Inspect the vacuum hose connecting the sensor to the intake manifold for cracks, blockage, or disconnection. A blocked hose will prevent accurate pressure readings.
Estimated Repair Cost
$100 - $450

The most common cause of P012A (Turbocharger/Supercharger Inlet Pressure Sensor Circuit (Downstream of throttle valve)) is: Failed turbo inlet pressure sensor with internal circuit failure or damaged pressure-sensing diaphragm
Typical repair costs for P012A range from $100 to $450, depending on the vehicle, location, and whether you do it yourself or go to a shop.
Loss of inlet pressure data can prevent the ECM from properly controlling boost pressure and wastegate operation. The vehicle may enter reduced power mode or experience uncontrolled boost, both of which affect drivability and could cause engine damage.
Start by connecting an OBD2 scanner to read the code and any freeze frame data. Then follow the diagnostic steps specific to P012A to identify the root cause.
