P0113

Easy (DIY)

Intake Air Temperature Circuit High Input Bank 1

What Does P0113 Mean?

The ECM has detected that the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor on bank 1 is producing a voltage signal above the expected maximum threshold. On an NTC thermistor sensor, high voltage corresponds to an implausibly low temperature — typically -40°F (-40°C) or lower. This almost always indicates an open circuit rather than actual extreme cold. The ECM will substitute a default temperature value for fuel and spark calculations.

Diagnostic Steps

1

Check live data — an IAT reading of -40°F (-40°C) confirms an open circuit condition on the IAT sensor input.

2

Verify the IAT sensor connector is fully seated and locked. Disconnect and inspect terminals for corrosion, spread pins, or green oxidation. Reconnect and recheck live data.

3

Measure IAT sensor resistance across its two terminals. At room temperature (68°F/20°C), expect 2.0-3.0 kOhms. An open reading (infinite resistance) means the sensor has failed.

4

If the sensor resistance is correct, check wiring continuity from the sensor connector to the ECM connector on both the signal wire and the ground return wire.

5

Temporarily jumper a 2.2 kOhm resistor across the IAT sensor connector pins. If the ECM reads approximately 68°F, the wiring and ECM are good — replace the sensor.

What causes P0113?

The most common cause of P0113 (Intake Air Temperature Circuit High Input Bank 1) is: Disconnected or loose IAT sensor connector

How much does it cost to fix P0113?

Typical repair costs for P0113 range from $15 to $125, depending on the vehicle, location, and whether you do it yourself or go to a shop.

Is it safe to drive with P0113?

Safe to drive. The ECM will use a default temperature value. Fuel economy and cold-start quality may be slightly diminished. No immediate safety hazard.

How do I diagnose P0113?

Start by connecting an OBD2 scanner to read the code and any freeze frame data. Then follow the diagnostic steps specific to P0113 to identify the root cause.
