What Does P0074 Mean?
The ECM has detected intermittent or erratic behavior in the ambient air temperature (AAT) sensor circuit. The sensor signal is fluctuating, dropping out, or jumping between values in a pattern inconsistent with actual temperature changes. This is typically caused by a loose connection, damaged wiring, or a sensor with an intermittent internal fault. The driver may see the outside temperature reading fluctuating wildly on the dashboard display.
Common Causes
35%
Loose, corroded, or intermittent connector at the AAT sensor
28%
Damaged wiring with intermittent break (flexes open/closed with vibration)
20%
AAT sensor with intermittent internal element fault
12%
Water or moisture intermittently bridging connector pins
5%
Electromagnetic interference from aftermarket electronics or ignition components
Diagnostic Steps
1
Monitor the AAT PID while wiggling the sensor connector and harness. An erratic signal that changes when the connector is disturbed confirms a connection issue at the sensor.
2
Inspect the sensor connector pins — look for green corrosion, bent/spread pins, or a damaged connector latch. The sensor's bumper-area location makes it prone to vibration-induced loosening.
3
With the sensor connected, gently flex the wiring harness along its route while watching the AAT PID. A signal dropout when flexing a specific section of wire indicates an internal break at that point.
4
Check the sensor connector for any signs of moisture entry. Water can create intermittent readings as it bridges and unbridges the pins with temperature changes and vibration. Dry and reseal with dielectric grease.
5
If the connection is solid but readings are erratic, measure sensor resistance while gently tapping the sensor body. An intermittent internal element will show jumpy resistance readings.
6
Check for aftermarket electronics (HID headlights, amplifiers) near the AAT sensor wiring that could cause electromagnetic interference.

The most common cause of P0074 (Ambient Air Temperature Sensor Circuit Intermittent/Erratic) is: Loose, corroded, or intermittent connector at the AAT sensor
Typical repair costs for P0074 range from $30 to $200, depending on the vehicle, location, and whether you do it yourself or go to a shop.
Safe to drive. The intermittent nature means the sensor sometimes reads correctly. The ECM handles the erratic input with filtering and default values. Outside temperature display may fluctuate. Very low priority but the intermittent nature may cause the check engine light to cycle on and off. Repair at your convenience.
Start by connecting an OBD2 scanner to read the code and any freeze frame data. Then follow the diagnostic steps specific to P0074 to identify the root cause.
