What Does P0036 Mean?
The ECM has detected a malfunction in the heater control circuit of the Bank 1, Sensor 2 heated oxygen sensor (downstream/post-catalytic converter). This sensor monitors catalytic converter efficiency, and its heater allows it to reach operating temperature quickly. A heater failure means the sensor takes longer to provide accurate readings, potentially affecting catalyst monitoring and slightly increasing emissions during warm-up.
Common Causes
40%
Failed HO2S heater element in the downstream sensor
20%
Blown O2 heater fuse or failed relay
20%
Damaged or corroded wiring/connector in the heater circuit
10%
Poor ground connection at the sensor or ECM
10%
ECM heater driver circuit failure
Diagnostic Steps
1
Check the O2 heater fuse and relay first. A blown fuse may affect multiple O2 sensor heaters — check if upstream sensor heater codes (P0030) are also present.
2
Locate the Bank 1 Sensor 2 (downstream) O2 sensor connector. Disconnect and measure heater element resistance — expect 2–15 ohms. An OL reading confirms a failed heater.
3
Verify battery voltage on the heater power supply wire with key on. If no voltage, trace back through the fuse, relay, and wiring to find the open circuit.
4
Check the ground control wire for continuity to the ECM. Command the heater on via scan tool and verify the ECM is toggling the ground. Measure voltage drop across the ground circuit — should be under 0.1V.
5
Inspect the downstream O2 sensor connector for heat damage, water intrusion, or road debris damage. The Sensor 2 position near the underside of the vehicle is vulnerable to physical damage.

The most common cause of P0036 (Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Heater Control Circuit Bank 1 Sensor 2) is: Failed HO2S heater element in the downstream sensor
Typical repair costs for P0036 range from $80 to $300, depending on the vehicle, location, and whether you do it yourself or go to a shop.
Safe to drive. The downstream sensor primarily monitors catalytic converter efficiency. A heater failure will not significantly affect drivability. However, the ECM cannot verify catalyst performance, which may cause emission test failure. Repair before inspection.
Start by connecting an OBD2 scanner to read the code and any freeze frame data. Then follow the diagnostic steps specific to P0036 to identify the root cause.
