Step 1: Perform visual inspection of the oil change reset button for physical damage, wear, or stuck position. Press button multiple times to verify mechanical operation and check if code status changes to intermittent.

Step 2: Using a multimeter, test the reset button switch for continuity by disconnecting the button connector and measuring resistance across terminals - should show open circuit (infinite resistance) when not pressed and near 0 ohms when pressed.

Step 3: Inspect all wiring and connectors between the reset button and instrument cluster/BCM for damage, corrosion, pushed-out pins, or breaks. Check connector terminals for proper seating and tension, clean any corrosion with electrical contact cleaner.

Step 4: With ignition on and button connector attached, backprobe the button circuit at the instrument cluster connector using a multimeter to verify voltage supply (typically 5V or 12V reference) and ground signal presence.

Step 5: If button and wiring test good, suspect instrument cluster or BCM fault. Check technical service bulletins for known issues with the specific vehicle's cluster, as some manufacturers have reprogramming or replacement campaigns.

Step 6: After repairs, clear codes, cycle ignition, actuate reset button multiple times, and verify code does not return and oil life reset function operates properly.
